THE FLASH'S TOM CAVANAGH TO APPEAR IN SUPERMAN & LOIS SERIES FINALE - BUT WHO IS HE PLAYING?

Could The CW have one last Arrowverse crossover up its sleeve? Following remarks made by Tom Cavanagh at a convention over the weekend, TVLine has confirmed that the Flash vet will appear in the series finale of Superman & Lois, appropriately titled "It Went By So Fast."

Cavanagh originally hoped to direct the pivotal episode, having previously helmed the Season 1 finale and Season 3 premiere, but the gig was already promised to frequent Superman & Lois director Gregory Smith. That's when showrunner Todd Helbing got an idea, one that will leave fans theorizing for months to come.

"The finale for Superman & Lois was taken up already, and so I said, ‘Well, I'm happy to not do it,'" Cavanagh recalled during a panel at FAN EXPO Philadelphia on Saturday. "Todd was like, ‘Well, would you play a role?' So that's coming up for those of you that watch Superman & Lois, something that I'm happy to have done."

Cue the theorizing: Will Cavanagh be playing Harrison Wells, the role he embodied for most of The Flash‘s nine-season run? Will he reprise one of Wells' alternate personalities from another Earth, like novelist H.R. or detective Sherloque? Or will he show up as another character entirely?

It would be surprising to see Cavanagh back in a familiar role, given the lengths Superman & Lois has gone to distance itself from the rest of The CW's now-defunct Arrowverse. Even David Ramsey, who appeared on Superman & Lois as recently as 2022, isn't playing the same Diggle we watched for eight seasons on Arrow, so it remains anyone's guess what form Cavanagh will take.

Though an exact premiere date has yet to be announced, Superman & Lois‘ 10-episode fourth and final season is expected to arrive sometime this fall. Of the show's previous cast, only five actors - Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent/Superman, Bitsie Tulloch as Lois Lane, Alex Garfin as Jordan Kent, Michael Bishop as Jonathan Kent and Michael Cudlitz as Lex Luthor - are returning as series regulars. The good news? Based on social media posts, it looks like all of the Kents' friends from Smallville (the Cushings, the Irons, etc.) will still pop up in Season 4, with some recurring more heavily than others.
