Ellen Pompeo, the beloved star of Grey's Anatomy, is set to reprise her iconic role as Dr Meredith Grey in at least seven episodes of the upcoming season.

The ABC drama, which centres around the lives of medical practitioners at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, has featured Ellen in all 20 seasons to date.

However, she has recently taken a step back from the hospital drama, with her character Meredith being in a coma and then moving to Boston midway through season 19.

Despite her character finding happiness with Nick Marsh (played by Scott Speedman), she continued to serve as the narrator and appeared in five episodes in season 20.

According to reports from Deadline, the Shonda Rhimes-produced drama is not ready to bid farewell to her just yet, suggesting a larger role for her in the next season.

TVLine later confirmed that Ellen will appear in at least seven episodes next season.

With the 21st season still in early production, it's reported that the number of episodes could increase to as many as 14.

Season 20 was shortened to 10 episodes due to the Hollywood actors and writers' strike, meaning Ellen still appeared in half the series.

It's no surprise that Meredith's story is set to continue, given there's still much to explore with her controversial Alzheimer's research.

But Ellen's expanded comeback - after she previously hinted at stepping back from the role - isn't the only major change to Grey's Anatomy's next outing.

At least two major characters will be wrapping up their storylines and bowing out next season, with TVLine reporting that Jake Borelli (Levi Schmitt) and Midori Francis (Mika Yasuda) will both be departing.

Plus, major cast members Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), James Pickens Jr (Richard Webber), Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt), Kim Raver (Teddy Altman), Caterina Scorsone (Amelia Shepherd) and Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson) haven't drawn up their contracts for future seasons yet, so any one of them could be announcing their departure in the next few months.

He'll not just be back as a guest star but a series regular, so he could stay on as part of the core cast if other major characters are saying their goodbyes.

Finally, Miranda's husband Ben Warren (Jason George) will be heading back to the flagship medical drama after crossing over to spin-off Station 19.

Grey's Anatomy is available to stream on Disney+.
